When I was growing up, St. Nicholas Day was always a fun and exciting day, so I wanted to continue the tradition with Madison. After we had Madison and I heard it was St. Nicholas Day, I started to discuss the day with some of my colleagues, only to find out that some of them have never heard of it. When I asked Matt about it, I found out he had never heard of it either. I was confused so I googled it!
Well I figured out that it is more of a European tradition. (That kind of explains why I grew up celebrating it.) It is celebrated different ways in different parts of Europe, and when I read the German tradition, it was very similar to way I celebrated it growing up.
On the evening of December 5th, we would anxiously wait until we heard a knock on one of our outside doors. When we heard the knock we knew that Santa had just left us something outside the door. We would run to the door and open it to find a brown grocery bag filled with something special for us. Usually it was a bag or two of candy and maybe some hats and gloves.
So here are videos of how we celebrated it with Madison. You can notice in the first video how she scurries to the door nervously. It is really cute!
