Gwen takes a fall

Hi! I'm Amy, Gwen's older sister. For those of you that don't know what happened, Gwen fell Sunday morning on the ice and broke her wrist. (that's why I'm doing the typing)

According to the injured, here's what happened.
Gwen decided to go into work, the dutiful teacher she is, wanted to prepare for Monday, the first day back after Christmas vacation. She went to her co-workers home to pick her up, and went into her house. On the way out, she fell down one, icy, step!

Jodi drove her to the hospital, Matt met her at Sparrow. He was already in Lansing getting paint for the baby's room. She arrived at the hospital around noon. The ER was packed, because everyone decided to do what Gwen did...Fall! They did the initial exam, she had x-rays and waited...and waited...and waited!!! She ever so patiently waited in the hallway because it was so crowded and they was no room for her in the inn! The x-ray's showed that both bones near her wrist were broken.

Finally she saw a doctor around 5pm when then she was able to take some pain medication. They checked the baby's heart rate, and all was okay. The doctor then and there thought that the sore on her arm could be the bone protruding thru. They decided that Gwen needed emergency surgery. Of course, all were concerned about her going into surgery pregnant, because they didn't know how the baby would re-act to the surgery/anesthesia. They doctors said the the second trimester (where she is at)is actually the best time to have a surgery if needed. With this being a compound fracture, this was not an elective surgery, she couldn't go walking around with a bone sticking out!!!

They started prepping her for surgery, but first they wanted to adjust the wrist to try and get it set a little before surgery. Then they cut her clothes off, and rolled her away to surgery. She was in surgery for about 1 1/2 hours. (The post-op nurse does not get a reward for being nice!) They again checked baby's heart rate and all was well.

Gwen spent the night, and checked baby's heart rate in the morning, and again, all was well. They sent her home around 10:00am. She is now at home recovering with her very attentive husband at her side. Matt has not only been taking care of Gwen, but has also finished painting and putting together furniture for the baby's room! What a man!


I, Amy just have to add...that Gwen is a MY HERO! Who on this earth can say they spent 4 1/2 hours in the ER with 2 broken bones, one of which was sticking out, WITHOUT pain medication! I personally would've passed out!!!

P.S. We forgot to add that they put in 10 screws and two plates into my wrist!
